During the winter break of 1980, Darrell attended the Conclave in San Francisco
and ran for the position of 2nd Vice Grand Basileus. During the district debate
about who would represent the 2nd District in the national election, it was
decided that the district would support Michael Matthews for his candidacy for
the 2nd Vice Grand Basileus position since he was the 2nd Vice DR for the second
district. So Darrell relented and ran for one of the three undergraduate
Intermediate positions. As it turned out Darrell obtained 9 of the 12 votes and
Michael Matthews got 2 votes. Afterwards the brothers of the 2nd district
questioned their decision. The brothers rejoiced in the fact that KH now had a
brother in the national office.
The spring of 1981 was getting under way as they had a huge pledge class of 7
lamps. One evening Brothers Gunter and Hollis decided to take the line out to
the park for a little exercise. During the exercise period Brother’s Gunter and
Hollis engaged the line in a little football game. Afterwards they returned to the
dorm, as the lamps were a bit sweaty and tired. The next day the brothers of
KH were shocked to hear that the entire line had dropped. Apparently, the
exercise and football was a bit too much for the line.
Apparently, one or more of the pledges had complained to the dean of students
Arthur Shriberg. Dr. Shriberg called Brother Gunter to his office to discuss the
complaints, as he was a national officer. Brother Gunter assured Dr. Shriberg
that no one of the pledge class was physically assaulted and that we would
conduct an investigation. After a discussion with the brothers and the national
office, Brother Gunter placed KH on suspension pending the investigation. After
the Dr. Shriberg and Brother Gunter concluded the investigation, the person who
had complained to Dr. Shriberg had recanted their complaint so no official
charges were filed. This activity closed out the year for the KH brothers and that
spring, brothers Harrison, Williams, Stockton, Hollis and Gunter graduated and
left KH in the capable hands of the brothers, Whitaker, Hinton, Mayo, Dunlap
and etc.
The brothers of KH were truly running the yard and decided to have a fundraiser
for UNCF that spring. They worked with Mel Knight the Assistant Athletic
Director, Seton Hall University to get access to the gym to play the Sigma’s in a
charity basketball game.
Unfortunately, the Sigma’s started the game with intent to fight as they punched
two brothers early in the game. After the second punched the brothers warned
the Sigma’s that if they did it again, all hell would breakout. Well seconds later
the Sigma’s threw another punch and all hell did breakout. The aftermath was
not pretty, as a riot broke out and several Sigma’s we sent to the hospital. Not
one Omega brother was hurt. Needless to say that Mel Knight revoked our gym
privileges.
