The chapter flush with the new brothers were now beginning to flex their full
muscle the fall of 1979. The African American community looked to the brothers
for assistance in a number of areas and ways. The year before a black
cheerleader was kicked of the squad for missing a practice or two and a black
wrestler champion on a full scholarship was kicked off the team. But due to the
efforts of the brothers they were reinstated without incident. Brother Graham’s
guidance to the brothers before his graduation provided them with the recipe to
correct wrongs. The Black Student Union often wondered what happened, as
the brothers would not engage them when a serious situation needed to be
handled.
The brothers did engage the Black Student Union when it came to elections and
that was a winning formula as Omega and BSU elected the first black home
coming queen in Seton Hall’s history. The next year the brothers and BSU
partnered again and a second straight black home coming queen was elected.
Well the next year the home coming queen activities were disbanded. They said
it was due to the football team being disbanded.
The fall of 1979 Darrell Gunter ran for the office of Vice President of the Resident
Student Association and with the help of the brothers and sister won a close
race. That year Brother Brian Williams ran for president of BSU and won.
The spring of 1980 presented KH with a new line of three brothers; Garnell
Miller, Ashley Turnbull and James Brewer. Their dean was Tyrone Haywood.
These lampado had faced something that the other brothers had not faced, a
chapter of 12 brothers who had a lot of time on their hands. This line survived
their pledge period and were now full fledge brothers. The brothers were fully
engaged in the campus politics as Darrell Gunter was elected to be the Chief
Justice of the Inter Fraternity Council for the 1980-81 year.
Unfortunately during the spring pledge line of 1980 some of the lamps had to
drop due to their grads not being up to snuff. So that summer, Brother Gunter
who was going to be on the yard taking some classes agreed to be their Dean.
So the 3 the Hard Way got underway with Eric Barbour, Jerry King and Michael
McLean. The brothers were a novelty as they were one of the first and only
pledge lines during the summer.
During the fall season in years past there was always a step show / dance held
at Montclair State University. For some reason it was not held the previous year
so the brothers stepped up and probably held the most successful step show /
dance party in Seton Hall history. The Seton Hall Theatre in the Round was
packed and the brothers of Tau Zeta threw down and won the competition. The
dance that we held in the Galleon Room was packed.
